Hurricane is upon us as Texas sees its first tropical storm of the year. "Potential Tropical Cyclone One has been identified by the National Hurricane Center as the system posing a threat to the southwestern Gulf Coast as it begins to organize in the Gulf of Mexico. This cyclone is expected to bring heavy rainfall and significantly increase the risk of flooding, impacting not only the United States but also regions of Mexico and Central America." We are already seeing some in our area begin to panic buy supplies. There is hope and it is not too late to prep for future storms!
Make a Plan: Determine your risk from potential hurricane impacts, including wind, rain, flooding, and tornadoes. Plan how to communicate with family members during and after the hurricane.
Emergency Kit: Assemble supplies you might need during a hurricane. Include food, water, medications, flashlights, batteries, and important documents.
Strengthen Your Home: Secure your property by decluttering drains and gutters, bringing in outside furniture, and installing hurricane shutters if possible.
During a Hurricane Watch:
Stay Informed: A hurricane watch means conditions are possible within the next 48 hours. Stay tuned to local news or the National Weather Service for updates.
Prepare to Evacuate: Know your evacuation zone and routes. If advised to evacuate, do so immediately.
During a Hurricane Warning:
Final Preparations: A hurricane warning means hurricane-force winds are expected. Complete final preparations and if you haven’t evacuated, find a safe room in your home.
After the Hurricane:
Remember, hurricanes can affect not just coastal areas but also can cause damage hundreds of miles inland. Always follow the guidance of local authorities and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts. For more detailed information, you can refer to resources provided by the CDC, Ready.gov, and the Red Cross.
