With all things, there are two ways to master a skill, years of experience or seeking out educational resources. As with many preppers, and those seeking self-sufficiency, a lot of our skills are self-taught or learned at an event like the Spring and Fall Homesteaders and Preppers Bazaar. Our acting Guild Master has taken that path as she has been gardening since she could dig her little hands into the dirt. She learned how to garden from her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother along with the neighbor of her great grandmother that operated a farm with cattle, goats, horses, and acres of crop going and his backyard garden.
One of the resources we have available in Texas, and in many other states, is a university sponsored Agriculture Extension program with offices in most counties.
"The Texas Master Gardener Association (TMGA) program is a statewide VOLUNTEER service organization that falls under the umbrella of the Texas A&M Agrilife Extension across Texas through the local county extension office. Master Gardeners (MG) are members of the local communities who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers, and gardens. They are enthusiastic, willing to learn and to help others, able to communicate with diverse groups of people."
Start your journey to being recognized as a Master Gardener in the Hill Country here. They are already full for the 2024 season, but feel free to reach out to them for the next class sessions. Along with class sessions, they look forward to those who are eager to share their gardening knowledge through volunteering.
