In today's unpredictable world, being prepared is not just an option but a necessity. Urban prepping has gained significant traction, with individuals recognizing the importance of readiness for any situation that may arise. Whether it's a natural disaster or a power outage, having the right essentials can make all the difference. Prepare for the unexpected with these essential items, and embark on your urban prepping journey with confidence!
1. Water Filtration System, Water Storage, and Emergency Water Sources
Ensuring access to clean water is paramount in any emergency scenario. A portable water filtration system is a versatile tool that can purify water from various sources, providing you with a safe drinking supply. Look for systems that are compact, efficient, and easy to use. You can find quality water filtration systems in outdoor and camping supply stores or online retailers specializing in emergency preparedness equipment. Life straw, or similar product, is our go-to suggestion as it fits all of the criteria above.
When living in a small space, considering how and where you can store water can be a challenge. Some of the unique spaces we have seen are a top shelf in a closet and the unused/hard to reach kitchen cabinets. Ottomans with storage inside are versatile and multi-purpose. The key factor is to store in approved water containers and in dark areas.
When an emergency alert is given that require you to "bug in", or "bugging out" is not an option, take a look at your tub as a source to quickly store water. AquaPod Kit, or other similar product, comes in a flat package making storage a breeze. We do recommend a new tub bladder for each use as there is no way to insure that all of the water can be removed causing harmful bacterial growths. Know where your water heater is and determine if there is an accessible outlet pipe to access water stored in the tank. Keep in mind that with no power this water source will not be heated and should be treated before consuming.
2. Emergency Food Supply
Having a stockpile of non-perishable food items is crucial for surviving emergencies. Focus on foods with long shelf lives such as canned goods, dried fruits, and energy bars. Store food you normally eat as it is easier to rotate your supply regularly to ensure freshness and check expiration dates. Consider purchasing dehydrated or freeze-dried meals specifically designed for emergency situations. Opt for freeze dried products that are light weight and can be stored in a bin under your bed or sofa/couch. You can find emergency food supplies in survival stores, online marketplaces, and even some grocery stores. Prep4Life is one of our preferred vendors for Freeze Driers and My Patriot Supply for freeze dried foods that come in storage buckets that fit on their side underneath most beds.
3. Multi-Tool Kit
A multi-tool kit is a versatile gadget that combines various tools in one compact unit. From knives and scissors to screwdrivers and can openers, a multi-tool comes in handy for a wide range of tasks in urban prepping scenarios. Invest in a high-quality, durable multi-tool kit that includes essential functionalities. You can find reliable multi-tool kits in hardware stores, outdoor equipment shops, and online retailers.
4. Emergency Lighting
In emergencies, a reliable source of light is essential for safety and comfort. Stock up on flashlights, headlamps, and lanterns to illuminate your surroundings when the power goes out. Opt for energy-efficient LED lights that offer long battery life and multi-purpose. We highly recommend a hand-crank option as it doesn't require batteries or solar recharge and includes an AM radio, for emergency broadcasts, National Weather Service frequency, and many models can be used to charge a mobile device. Make sure to have spare batteries or rechargeable options available. Emergency lighting supplies can be purchased from Amazon, hardware stores, camping outlets, and online emergency preparedness stores. Avoid online shopping from sites such as TEMU and WISH as quality is hit or miss.
5. First Aid Kit
Every urban prepper should have a well-equipped first aid kit readily available. Include essential items such as bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, scissors, and adhesive tape. Customize your kit based on your specific needs and any personal health concerns. Check and restock your first aid kit regularly to ensure all items are up to date. First aid kits can be found in pharmacies, outdoor shops, and online retailers specializing in medical supplies. We recommend one that is compatible with MOLLE systems as it can easily be attached to a belt for quick transport. Many also come with above listed items.
Urban prepping is all about being prepared and self-sufficient in the face of adversity. By having these five essential items in your prepping kit, you can feel confident in your ability to handle unexpected situations effectively. Remember to regularly check your supplies, stay informed on best practices, and continuously assess your preparedness level. Stay safe, stay prepared, and stay confident!
