Safety Saturday - Holiday Edition: Food and Fido

Celebrations frequently include food, copious amounts of food. Like heaping mounds of it that feel like they are going to last forever! Before getting Fido to help with all of that food, here are a few common holiday foods that might cause stomach discomfort, illness, or death.

Spices make everything taste better. Here is a list of spices and seasonings to avoid:

  • Onions, Garlic, Pepper, and Peppers you will also want to skip the corn husks or banana leaves on the tamales

  • Stuffing with the works: gravy, salt, spices, or fats

  • Fried foods some of the oils out there can cause irritable bowels so it is just safer to skip it

  • Skip the bones as they could become lodged in the digestive tract or splinter

  • Pumpkin pie - while cooked pumpkin is good for dogs, the added spices adds it to the skip it list

  • Bread or Pizza dough - baked is a go, raw is a no go as the yeast can cause dangerous bloating

  • Everyone should know that chocolate is bad for dogs, but did you know most candy can cause water to be pulled across a semi-permeable membrane, such as those inside animal cell causing an electrolyte balancing act into over drive.

  • Xylitol is in the deadly category - remember to check the peanut butter label as well!

What can Fido help with eating:

  • Plain chicken or turkey cut into small chunks

  • Apples minus the skin and seeds - if cooked make sure there are no added ingredients

  • Carrots and Celery are two of the favorite treats for our motley crew. Celery does get cut into pieces to avoid any of the fibrous strands getting hung up in the digestive system

  • Bone Broth - go for the unseasoned

  • Potatoes and Sweet Potatoes that are baked or boiled

  • Pumpkin - canned, cooked, pureed minus the salt, sweeteners, or spices

This is just a teaser list. More information can be found at Rover's Holiday Food Safety Guide for Pets | The Dog People
