Safety Saturday - Holiday Package Delivery Safety

Most of us know that getting that perfect online present delivered on time can be a challenge. Shipping companies are anticipating over 15 billion packages, letters, and cards will be delivered this year. When you think about it, this is a lot compared to the number of delivery drivers there even when seasonal delivery drivers are included. Here are a few tips to insure you get your packages on time and reduce the potential of package theft.

  1. Plan ahead with making your purchases. Many companies are recommending to do a majority of your shopping during Cyber Monday sales. Since we are well past that date, we recommend sooner rather than later. We chose December 10th to be the last day we make our online purchases. You could go with the 15th, but some of your packages may not arrive on time. The closer you get to December 25th, you risk a higher chance of not getting your gifts on time.

  2. Install cameras and/or a smart doorbell on your front porch so that anyone who approaches your packages there is a greater chance of identifying them. While cameras can present a deterrence, it is not fool proof.

  3. Rent a delivery or P.O. Box for the holidays. Go with a company like Mail Stop with more hours than the USPS. They sign for your packages and keep them safe until you arrive to pick them up.

  4. Designate a location on your mailing address for leaving packages on your property. We have a locking box near the front of our property that is not visible from the highway. Delivery drivers are directed to leave packages in there or on our ramp which is highly visible to three rather large dogs. Their names are "holy schitte that's a big dog!"; "OMG! She can reach the top of an 8' high fence with her front paws!"; and "WTF are they feeding them?"

  5. Network with your neighbors to keep an eye out for delivery drivers and bring them inside, message you, and remember to follow through with a set pick-up time.

  6. Going out of town? Get the post office to hold your mail until you return. While this doesn't cover the other delivery companies, you can request "signature upon delivery" which allows you to contact the company to either pick your packages up or change the delivery date.

We hope these tips help make your holiday a joyous one.
