Dog Days of Summer:

The phrase “dog days of summer” has an intriguing origin. It doesn’t actually refer to panting pooches but harks back to ancient times when civilizations tracked seasons by observing the sky.

Here’s the story:

  • Ancient Greeks: They noticed that during early summer, a 40-day period, the brightest star in the sky—Sirius—rose and set with the sun. The Greeks called it “glowing” or “scorcher.” When combined with the sun’s heat, it equaled extreme temperatures. Sirius was believed to be the dog of the hunter Orion.

  • Ancient Romans: They associated Sirius with the sun’s heat and called this sweltering period the “dies caniculares” or “days of the dog star.”

  • English World: By the 1500s, the term evolved into “dog days.” Due to Earth’s rotation wobble, the dates now fall between July 3 and August 11 in the United States.

So, next time you feel the heat, blame it on Sirius, the celestial “scorcher. Remember to stay hydrated, find shade, and here's to the dog days of summer!
